How to Prep Ground for a Above-Ground Pool
Swimming pools are a welcome addition, especially during the summer. They can be costly. An above-ground pool is a cheaper alternative to an in-ground pool and can usually be installed by the homeowner. Above-ground pool installations require a good bit of preparation to get the ground level so that you will be able to maintain a level water level. It will also add stability to your pool walls. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the area where your pool will be installed, using a tape measure. The diameter of the ground area should extend at least 1 foot beyond the base of the pool walls. Use stakes to mark off where you'll prepare the soil.
-
2
Remove all sod in the are that you have staked out, using a shovel.

3
Dig out the high side of the ground and use that soil to build up the low side, using the shovel. If the low side is extremely low, it is best to lower the high side. This will provide a more stable area for your pool, rather than raising the low side. Check your work with a level.
-
4
Tamp down the soil once you have the area level. Go over the soil several times so it is completely packed. Remove all large rocks and debris from the area.
-
5
Install flat patio blocks or stones along the outside area where the pool walls will be. The stones will prevent dents in the side walls and will help support the weight of the water. Use a tape measure to place the stones approximately 18 inches apart from one another. The top part of the stone should be level with the ground surface, so dig a place to sit the stones. Place a two-by-four on top of two adjacent stones to determine if the stones are level with one another. Do not allow the stones to be more than 1/16 inch off.
-
6
Apply a 2-inch layer of masonry sand along the entire base of the pool area. This will prevent damage to the liner and will prevent weeds from growing under the pool. Use a rake to smooth the sand over the area.
-
7
Assemble the bottom track of the walls and line them up on top of the patio stones. Once you have determined the stones are in the correct position, you can install the pool walls, liner and top supports.
