How to Job Hunt While Employed

The benefit of job hunting while still employed is that you will be able to pay your bills while seeking a new position. The hard part is maintaining a good relationship with your current employer while doing so. You may need that employer as a reference in the future. Make sure to maintain a good relationship with your employer, and when you leave do so on good terms.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply only to jobs that are a step up from your current job, in terms of pay or personal satisfaction. Make sure you are getting something out of the switch. Write down a list of things you want from a new job so you understand your objectives clearly.

    • 2

Keep the job hunt to yourself unless you have a particularly close relationship with your supervisor, but remember to give adequate notice once you have decided to take a position with a different employer. This may be anywhere from a month to three days, depending on your job. Help train your replacement, when asked.

    • 3

Arrange our interviews to occur on your days off or during your lunch break. Missing work to apply elsewhere makes you look bad and can result in a bad reference from your current employer.

    • 4

Look for and apply for jobs from your home computer, not from your work computer and not during work hours. Many companies track and regulate their employees' internet use.

    • 5

Change your resume to read "contact available upon request" instead of listing the contact number for your current employer. This way, you can decide if the job position you are being considered for is worth letting your boss know about the job hunt.

    • 6

Say good things about your current and past employers, when asked. Describe why you feel a new job will be more fitted to your needs but avoid complaining about your current employer and co-workers.

    • 7

Avoid discussing the job hunt with your co-workers, as you do not want to contribute to office gossip or have your employer find out about the job hunt from someone else.

    • 8

Keep producing quality work at your job, even as you prepare to leave it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared for the possibility that you will be asked to leave your position immediately upon giving your notice.
