How to Take Portraits With a Digital Camera
Digital cameras, sometimes referred to as point-and-shoot cameras, are capable of producing high-quality portraits without the added complexities and expenses that you might encounter with a digital single lens reflex camera, or Digital SLR. With the right setting, lighting and technique, point-and-shoot cameras can easily transform a subject and its surroundings into a beautiful portrait.

Choose the setting of the portrait, making sure that there is enough natural light for the subject to be photographed. Outdoors usually has the best natural light but rooms with large windows also work well.

Check to see if the flash will fire, if needed. Most digital cameras will adjust their settings according to where the picture is being taken but double check, just to make sure.

Use the zoom button to zoom closer to the subject. Try to keep a steady hand and center the subject as much as possible. Focus on the facial features and expression of the subject.

Push the capture button, usually located in the top right corner, right under your index finger. Make sure to hold the button long enough to take the picture.

Release the button after the still image has appeared on the screen.
