Techniques To Train a New Puppy
A cute puppy makes a great addition to any family. As with all family members, a new puppy needs to learn the rules. Train your puppy as soon as possible. Teach your puppy to become acclimated to a crate and how to walk on a leash. These lessons will make going for a walk manageable and offer a comfortable and safe environment for the puppy. They will also provide a bond between you and your puppy that will last a lifetime.

Train Your Puppy to Walk on a Leash
-
1
Puppies learn to walk on a leash quickly. Place a collar around your puppy's neck when he is distracted by eating or playing. He may be uncomfortable at first and try to take it off. Keep the collar on until your puppy forgets about it and moves on to something else.
-
2
Clip the leash to the collar and let your puppy play with it.
-
-
3
Pick up the leash and walk around the room with your puppy beside you. Hold the leash loosely.
-
4
Stop and call your puppy to you whenever he puts a strain on the leash.
-
5
Start walking again with your puppy beside you after he comes to you. Stop and call him to you every time he pulls on the leash. The purpose of this lesson is to teach your puppy that he will not go anywhere when he strains or pulls on the leash.
-
6
Repeat this routine every day until your puppy has mastered the task.
Crate Train Your Puppy
-
7
Use treats to praise your puppy. Place a bed, water bowl, toys and treats inside the crate to prepare it.
-
8
Place your puppy into the crate for 15 minutes after he eats.
-
9
Take your puppy outside to eliminate. Allow him to play for a few minutes afterward.
-
10
Place your puppy back in the crate.
-
11
Take your puppy outside to eliminate every hour. Let him play for a few minutes afterward each time.
-
12
Place your puppy back in the crate when playtime is over.
-
13
Change the schedule for taking your puppy outside as his bladder develops. Instead of every hour, take him out every two hours.
-
14
Take your puppy outside through the same door each time. He will eventually learn to go to this door when he has to eliminate.
