How to Clean Salt Water Chlorinated Pools
There are subtle differences between salt water chlorinated swimming pools and swimming pools that are sanitized by using standard chlorination methods. The main difference is that salt water chlorinated pools include a salt chlorine generator that uses regular standard salt to chlorinate the pool. The chlorine is extracted from the table salt and added to the water. However, this action isn't quite enough to keep the water in your swimming pool clean throughout the season. Remove surface debris from the water of your swimming pool on a daily basis. You can use a standard leaf skimmer to remove debris.

Use a brush to scrub the side walls of your swimming pool. Be sure to use the type of brush recommended for the type of liner you have -- such as an algae brush for concrete pools, tile brush for tile pools and nylon brush for vinyl pools.

Vacuum the bottom of your pool liner using a pool vacuum cleaner. It's important to do this before you add the salt to the salt chlorine generator. Use long, overlapping strokes to ensure the entire bottom is clean.

Add the salt to the salt chlorine generator. If you haven't added salt yet, you will need about 50 lbs. per 2,000 gallons of pool water. Otherwise, use a salt test strip to test the water. The level should be 4,000 parts per million, or ppm. Add the salt to the generator and use your scrub brush to help it dissolve.

Run your pump for 24 hours after adding the salt. This will allow the generator to extract the needed amount of chlorine from the salt for your pool so that the water can be properly sanitized.
