How to Tie a Barrel Knot Cravat

A cravat, more commonly known as an ascot, is a formal necktie that was most popular in the 17th century. Though the cravat is rarely seen in modern men's fashion, learning to tie one can be useful for costumes, period clothing or for those who want to stand out in a sea of bow ties at a formal event. One way to secure a cravat is with a barrel knot, which is created by making a loose overhand knot in the cloth. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place length of cravat cloth around your collar so the right side is slightly longer than the left.

    • 2

Create a loose loop with the cloth, right side over the left, and pinch the ends of the loop together in an X formation, leaving two loose ends free.

    • 3

Wrap the right side over once more, creating a loop around the X formation.

    • 4

Pull the loose left side end through the loop you have just created and pull as tightly as desired.

    • 5

Use your fingers to straighten the knot and cravat and position it against your shirt.
