How to Clean Air Conditioner Compressor Fins

The air conditioning compressor is the large outdoor unit of a central air system. The compressor has a top cover and fins that cover the sides. Over time, the fins can become clogged with dirt, leaves, and other debris. This will decrease the efficiency of the air conditioner and may even make it run hot. Annual cleaning of the fins will ensure the compressor runs efficiently year round.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Soft bristled scrub brush
• Vacuum with brush attachment
• Garbage bag
• Garden hose with spray nozzle

Instructions

1. Turn off your air conditioning unit and then turn off the electrical power to the unit at the circuit breaker. Locate the screws holding the grill on top of the air conditioner. Remove the screws with a screwdriver and remove the top grill cover.

2. Pull out any leaves or debris stuck in the fins. Brush the outside of the fins with a soft-bristled scrub brush to remove dirt and dust.

3. Attach a brush attachment to your vacuum cleaner hose. Vacuum the outside of the fins with the brush attachment.

4. Cover the electrical components of the air conditioner, including the motor, with a large plastic bag. Spray the inside of the fins with a garden hose that has a spray nozzle. This will remove any remaining dirt clogging the compressor fins. Let the fins dry before removing the plastic bag and reattaching the top grill.
