How to Tune with Shocks
One of the easiest things you can do to tune your suspension for the smoothest possible ride and handling is to install shocks or struts that offer the characteristics you are looking for. For example, if you drive a sports car, the required shock profile is vastly different from that of a family car. Shock absorbers for luxury vehicles are engineered with a smooth ride in mind. Some shocks offer the best of both worlds and can be adjusted by a dash-mounted switch.

Install shocks for a smooth ride. Basic shocks have internal dampening valves that quickly respond to potholes or bumps in the road. They are inexpensive and generally available at most parts stores. This design is the shock of choice for most family cars.

2
Select and install sports and performance shocks for snappier handling. The internal valves inside the shock are less responsive and this modification helps keep the tires on the road longer before they rebound up and down. The ride is considerably rougher. These shocks are more expensive and made by companies that specialize in high-performance shocks, such as Koni.

Install specialty shocks that use magnetic dampening for an on-demand tunable suspension. These shocks are expensive and difficult to install. Additional wiring and switching is required. Other options are available, however, such as gas-charged shocks. Gas-charged shocks increase the life expectancy of the shocks by dissipating heat more quickly than standard oil-filled shocks.
