How to Convert My Chain-Link Fence Into a Privacy Fence

How to Convert My Chain-Link Fence Into a Privacy Fencethumbnail
Use a fence weave to create a privacy fence on a chain-link fence.

A fence weave made out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) can convert your chain-link fence into a privacy fence that will still let in light, and it will only take a few hours to do. One 250-foot roll of weave will cover about 50 diagonal rows of a 6-foot chain-link fence. The PVC fence weave comes in several different colors, allowing you to create your own color patterns on the chain-link fence while establishing your back yard privacy.

    Things You'll Need

    • Knee pads
    • Small pry bar
    • 250-foot rolls of PVC weave with clips
    • Small plastic bag
    • Scissors
    • Vise grips

Put on your knee pads. Unband two rolls of fence weave and remove their cardboard cores. Divide the clips that come with the rolls into groups that you put in your pockets for easy access and the rest into a small plastic bag to leave on the ground.

Open the top and bottom link loops on your first 10-foot section with a small pry bar. Starting at the top with both rolls, tuck the weave securely under the second link, and clip them off.

Weave both rolls in a diagonal direction down through the chain link fence. Pull on the weave to keep it taut. Fold each weave section over about 2 inches before you get to the bottom, and add a clip. Weave both PVC sections in and out through the remainder of the chain-link fence, and clip them down on the bottom link. Trim both sections off with scissors. Keep the scissors on the fence so you can find them.

Clip both weave sections to the next section of the top of the fence by pushing the clip up under the top link, and weave both sections in and out of the chain-link fence. Pull on the weave to ensure that it is taut. Add the clips before you reach the bottom, finish weaving, clip the ends to the bottom chain-link loops, and trim the bottom of the weaves with scissors.

Re-crimp both top and bottom chain-link loops when you are finished installing the PVC weave. Trim off any PVC weave that sticks out.
