How to Reorganize a Bottleneck Work Station

Messy and unkempt work stations can create bottlenecks for people trying to get past desks. They also can violate building codes in certain circumstances and may even be fire hazards. Whether it's the arrangement of the work stations themselves or the arrangement of the items in and around them, reorganizing and cleaning up is the key to eliminating bottlenecks. See Reference 1.

Instructions

    • 1

Go through all items causing the bottleneck and divide them into two categories according to which ones are used the most and which ones are used only occasionally. If the items do not belong to you, work with your employees or co-workers to categorize them.

    • 2

File the documents in a filing cabinet, and use hanging folders to organize them.

    • 3

Experiment with different furniture arrangements to create a better traffic flow. Remove any bulky items, such as unused chairs, to free up additional space.
