Installing an Amp in a 2006 Jeep
Installing an amplifier in a 2006 Jeep will change the sound dynamics of the vehicle's stereo system no matter what model of Jeep the amplifier will be installed in. An amplifier, whether ultimately connected to speakers, a sound-bar or subwoofer, amplifies the signal from the stereo allowing for louder volume without distortion, or lower bass frequencies to be broadcast through a subwoofer.
Things You'll Need
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Amplifier wiring kit
- Crescent wrench
- Wire cutters
- Electrical tape
- Drill and bits
Instructions
-

1
Open the engine compartment, locate the battery and disconnect the black negative battery cable.
-
2
Remove the plastic trim piece around the Jeep's stereo by gently prying it away from the vehicle's dashboard. This step will vary slightly depending upon the model of Jeep. Consult the owner's manual for specific directions.

-
3
Slide the stereo forward after removing the four bolts securing the stereo with a socket wrench and socket.
-
4
Determine where the amplifier will be located and secure in place using a screwdriver and the provided hardware.
-
5
Connect the red power cable with in-line fuse from an amplifier wiring kit to the red positive battery terminal using a crescent wrench and the provided hardware. Make sure the end with the in-line fuse is closest to the battery. Route the cable through an existing hole in the firewall, down one side of the Jeep to the amplifier location. Attach to the amplifier using a screwdriver.
-
6
Locate the blue accessory wire coming from the back of the stereo. Use wire cutters to remove a small section of the plastic protective coating exposing the wire. Locate the blue wire from the amplifier wiring kit and remove the plastic coating from one end. Connect the two wires by wrapping the bare wire end around the exposed wire. Wrap all exposed wire in electrical tape. Run the accessory wire down the same side of the Jeep as the red power cable to the amplifier location. Connect the accessory wire to the amplifier using a screwdriver.
-
7
Connect the RCA patch cables from the amplifier wiring kit to the RCA pre-outs on the back of the stereo. Route the patch cables down the side of the Jeep opposite from the red power cable to the amplifier location. Plug the patch cables into the amplifier.
-
8
Attach one end of the ground wire to the amplifier and the other to an area of exposed metal on the Jeep using a screwdriver.
-
9
Slide the stereo back into the Jeeps dashboard and replace the surrounding plastic trim piece. Reattach the negative battery cable. The amplifier is now installed and ready to be connected to a sound-bar, speakers or a subwoofer.
