Turn off the power to the fixture using the switch or unplugging it from the wall socket. Read the wattage rating on the top of the light bulb. For example, you may see a rating of 75 watts. This most likely falls into the safe light range for your lamp or fixture.

Unscrew and remove the bulbs from the fixture. Insert the new low wattage light bulb suitable for your needs. For example, if you wish to have a high powered light for a family or game room, use a low watt diffused high-powered bulb.
