1
Combine the 4 cups of Epsom salts, 2 cups of course rock salt, 2 cups of baking soda and 1½ cups of citric acid in the large mixing bowl. Mix these ingredients thoroughly with the wooden spoon until they are equally distributed. The citric acid will give your bath salts their effervescent quality.

Add the essential oil that you have chosen. The essential oil should be added slowly, one drop at a time. After each drop you should stir the mixture and check it for fragrance intensity. Essential oils are extremely concentrated, so each drop makes a significant difference. Keep adding the oil until you have reached the fragrance level that you prefer. If you like, you can mix two or more essential oils to achieve a more complex fragrance and aromatherapy benefits.

Add several drops of food coloring. As you add the food coloring, stir the bath salts to distribute the color evenly. You will probably need about 15 drops, although this varies. Select a color that complements the scent you have chosen, such as green for mint salts or purple for lavender salts.

4
Place the bath salts in lidded jars or other containers that can be fastened shut. If moisture is kept out of the containers, the bath salts can last for more than a year.
-
5
Pour a generous amount of the bath salts under the running faucet of your bath. For a bath that will soothe sore muscles, try at least one-half cup. The effervescent bath salts will change an ordinary bath into a spa-like experience as the fragrance fills the bathroom and you lie back in the tub, relaxing and watching the water fizz.
