How to Take the Smell of Mothballs Out of a Room
If you have a room that has a strong odor of mothballs, it is in your and your pets' best interest to get rid of that smell as quickly as possible. Since they are insecticides, mothballs actually give off toxic fumes and odors that are harmful to your health when inhaled. For this reason, mothballs are intended for use in closed containers and not rooms. Instead of using candles or aerosol sprays, you can effectively take the smell out of the room with some natural alternatives that will not add to the toxic vapors in the room. Remove any remaining mothballs from the room. As long as you have the mothballs in the room, you will not be able to get rid of the odor.

Open windows in the room to let fresh air in to cleanse the air. If you can open a door or window in another room you can create a cross breeze to expedite getting the air from the home.

Apply some lavender or peppermint essential oil to a cold light bulb and put it in the light fixture in the room. When the light is on, the oil will heat up and create a pleasant scent in the room, which can help to get rid of the mothball smell.

Set out bowls of vinegar in the room. Let the bowls sit for 24 hours to neutralize the air in the room.

Place broken pieces of charcoal in bowls around the room. It will absorb the odors of the mothballs. Do not use the fast light charcoal because it has smelly lighter fluid in it.

Sprinkle baking soda around the room. Let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming it up.
