How to Create a 3-D Science Project on Eight Phases of the Moon
Make your next science fair project stand out from the rest by creating a 3-D science project on the eight phases of the moon. With some research and careful planning, you can create a project that displays your knowledge of the phases of the moon and shares it with everyone observing it. There are a few things you can do to ensure your project gets the grade it deserves and "wows" your teacher.
Things You'll Need
- 8 medium-sized Styrofoam balls
- Reference sheet showing the 8 phases of the moon
- Black paint
- Paint brush
- 2 x 4 piece of wood
- Measuring tape
- Piece of Styrofoam 2 inches smaller than the wood base
- Glue
- 8 wire hangers
- Wire cutter
- Labels of each phase of the moon
Instructions

1
Purchase eight medium-sized Styrofoam balls from your local craft store. Have a reference sheet out for your child to use as a guide showing the eight phases of the moon.
-
2
Using the moon phase chart as a guide, take each Styrofoam ball and paint the portion that is not visible during that phase, black. For example, when it is a New Moon, paint the whole ball black. Let the balls dry for two to three hours.

3
Use a piece of 2 x 4 wood as your base. To determine the size of the wood base, lay the Styrofoam balls out next to each other with about an inch between them. This is how they will be placed on the board. Measure the length of all the balls next to each other and add two inches to each side. This will be the size of your wood base.
-
4
Cut a piece of Styrofoam about 2 inches smaller than the size of the wood base. Glue it to the base.
-
5
Cut wire hangers, using a wire cutter, into pieces that are 6 inches long. Taking the wire hanger, insert each one into the Styrofoam base, leaving enough space between them for the balls.
-
6
Take the Styrofoam balls that you painted and place one ball on the top of each wire hanger, starting with the first quarter. When you are finished, you will have a line of balls that are 3-D showing the eight phases of the moon.
-
7
Create a label for each phase of the moon. Place the label on the wood base in front of each phase so people can tell the phase displayed.
