Honoring our veterans is very important, because it shows them gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifice and service to the United States. Find a veteran in your community and conduct a brief interview. If you don't know of any veterans in your community, call your local VFW and ask them for permission to interview one of their members. Ask veterans questions like how they got involved with the armed forces, what branch of the armed forces they served in, when they served and what experiences they had. Ask any questions as long as they are respectful, polite and have to do with your essay paper. The interview should not take long; you should be able to have enough information in ten or fifteen minutes. Write down the veteran's responses in your notepad, and be sure to read any quotes back for accuracy.

Identify your thesis and write your opening paragraph around it. Your thesis, or your main point of emphasis, can be placed in the beginning of your paragraph, the middle or used as your last sentence. Your thesis for why we should honor our veterans should have something to do with why you feel veterans are important. Be sure to mention how veterans have died fighting for America's democracy and safety and explain how that has affected you. Your thesis should be the main idea of your essay paper, and you want to help support it with everything else you are going to say in the essay paper.

Write the essay paper's body paragraphs to reinforce your thesis, and finish the essay paper writing about anything you have learned during the interview process. You can use the closing paragraph to write about how your opinions regarding veterans might have changed during the assignment.
