Instructions

    • 1

Take up the old flooring to expose the subfloor. Remove tile with a power chisel and scrape up laminate flooring with a floor scraper. Take up hardwood with a pry bar and claw hammer. Remove the old flooring from the room.

    • 2

Open the windows and place a portable fan in the entryway facing away from the room to pull noxious fumes out of the space. Put on eye protection, gloves and a painter's mask.

    • 3

Pour methylene chloride or denatured alcohol over the floor. Let the methylene chloride or denatured alcohol soak into the adhesive to loosen it from the subfloor according to the time recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 4

Scrape the adhesive up with a paint scraper or floor scraper. Use a broom and dust pan to take-up the scraped adhesive. Begin at the back corner of the room and move to the entryway to get all of the adhesive up.

    • 5

Clean the subfloor with a mop and bucket once all the adhesive has been scraped and brushed away. Allow the subfloor to dry and then apply one coat of sealer using a paintbrush or roller. Let the sealer fix and then apply a coat of primer and paint or stain the floor to finish it.
