Lightweight two-stroke engines can be a good solution for marine use. Simple maintenance can keep them running well. Problems can arise if the engines aren't kept in good shape, particularly because their use tends to be cyclical, and the two-stroke can deteriorate when left for long periods. Problems running a Mercury two-stroke outboard engine can most commonly be related to cooling, fuel and the spark plugs. These kinds of areas can be investigated and fixed through troubleshooting.

Unblock the cooling system if the engine overheats. Mercury two-stroke outboards use water to cool. The inlets are below the water line and can become clogged in muddy or weed-strewn water. Salt can also be a problem. If you see debris in the water and raise the outboard and see debris around the propeller, it's likely the cooling system has become clogged. Attach the flushing system to the inlets and flush with fresh water.

Check the fuel filter and line if the engine starts and then stops, or doesn't start. Drain the existing gasoline into a container and grasp the fuel filter in the tank with a coat hanger. Pull it toward you and replace it with a new one. When you pull it out, you'll see it's likely clogged with visible debris. Replace the fuel while you're at it.

Change the spark plug if you continue to have starting problems. Pull the boot that's connected to the wire, and remove it from the end of the plug. Unscrew the plug with the socket set and replace it. Be careful not to allow any dirt or water into the hole left by the spark plug during this process.
