How to Super Insulate Metal Buildings
Metal buildings offer faster assembly and added security compared to traditional wood construction, but the insulating properties of metal is inferior to that of wood framing. Properly insulating a metal building is essential to providing comfort to those utilizing the building and protecting the contents stored inside. Due to the construction of metal buildings, drafts and air leaks are common without properly installed insulation. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Skyjack
- Ladder
- Double-sided tape
- Insulation with a vapor barrier
- Metal tape
Instructions
-
-
1
Calculate appropriate R-value for insulating in your area of the country. Purchase insulation accordingly (see Resources).
-
2
Place skyjack or ladder in place under working area. Ceiling height determines the need to use a skyjack.
-
-
3
Position double-sided tape on all the girts (upright framing members) and purlins (framing members for roof) of the structure.
-
4
Unroll insulation and then attach it to the double-sided tape. Place vapor barrier facing out. Do not pull the insulation tight between the girts and purlins as air circulation is needed for evaporation of moisture.
-
5
Place metal tape along both sides of the insulation to hold the insulation in place.
