How to Make a Makeup Bag Out of Vinyl
Vinyl is a great material for makeup bags. Makeup bags need to be easy to clean and water resistant, because makeup is prone to spills. Vinyl can be purchased at many craft and fabric stores by the yard. Vinyl can be difficult to sew, however, unless you have the right tools. To sew a vinyl makeup bag, you will need seam binding tape for sewing two pieces of vinyl together and a zipper to create a secure closure.

Cut one rectangle of vinyl that is the width you want your bag to be plus 1/2 inch for seam allowance and twice the length of the makeup bag with an added inch for seam allowance. Fold it in half along its length so that it is the size and shape that you want your bag to be when it is finished. Vinyl does not have a right or wrong side, so either way is fine.

Attach the zipper at the open top of the folded rectangle. Sew the zipper onto each side separately using your sewing machine's zipper foot with the zipper pull facing inward and down on the machine. If the zipper is facing up and the vinyl is facing down, the machine will have trouble pulling the materials through. Carefully turn the bag inside out so that the zipper pull is facing out.

Cut two pieces of seam binding tape that are 1/2 inch longer than the sides of the makeup bag. Fold the top and bottom edge of the binding tape inward to hide the rough edges and pin the binding tape around the edge of the sides of the bag. The binding tape should cover the edge of the zipper at the top as well.

Sew through the seam binding tape and the vinyl at the sides of the rectangle, creating a closure at each side. The bag should now open at the top with the zipper and be closed at the sides and bottom.

Tips & Warnings
This bag can be hand sewn, but it is difficult to sew through vinyl by hand.
Do not attempt to sew vinyl on a sewing machine without a fabric such as bias tape or cotton broadcloth on the bottom side of the vinyl piece.
