How to Troubleshoot a 1984 Pontiac Fiero Idle Adjustment

A hand drill is required to access the idle speed adjustment linkage without removing the throttle body.

The Pontiac Fiero was manufactured between the years 1984 to 1988. They have two different types of engines when it concerns idle speed and fuel mixture adjustments: 1984-86 model engines and 1987-88 model engines. The idle speed and fuel mixture is controlled by the ECU and all adjustments are not necessary unless the throttle body has been replaced. Troubleshoot an idle speed and fuel mixture adjustment only after a certified technician inspects the operation of the ECU in your Pontiac Fiero.

Instructions

  1. 1984-86 Throttle Body Engine

    • 1

Score a mark on the center line over the throttle stop screw. The housing of the throttle adjustment assembly is located where the throttle stop lever and throttle linkage meet.

    • 2

Use a 5/32" diameter drill bit and a power hand drill to drill a 4 mm hole straight down on the scored mark.

    • 3

Feed a 2 mm punch through the drilled hole and knock the throttle stop screw plug out of the housing.

    • 4

Visually inspect the idle adjustment assembly for integrity, dirt or contamination. Clean or re-install the throttle stop screw correctly. Visually inspect the throttle stop lever and throttle linkage for integrity. Tighten or replace linkage and lever if necessary.

    • 5

Start the vehicle and make sure the transmission is in park or neutral if idle adjustment is necessary. Apply the parking brake; adjust the throttle stop screw until the tachometer reads approximately 500 for an automatic transmission and 775 for a manual.

    1987-88 Throttle Body Engine

    • 6

Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the air cleaner, air cleaner box and its gasket.

    • 7

Dig an awl into the screw plug of the idle adjustment housing. Use a fulcrum for leverage and pop the plug out of the housing. Visually inspect the throttle stop screw, throttle lever stop and throttle linkage for integrity.

    • 8

Run the engine and ensure the transmission is in neutral or park if idle adjustment is required. Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the throttle stop screw until the tachometer read approximately 600 rpm in idle.
