How to Find Out How Many Gallons Are in a Swimming Pool

Swimming pools come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Normally, when adding chemicals to your swimming pool you need to know how many gallons of water are in the swimming pool. Using a tape measure and basic geometry, you can manually calculate the approximate number of gallons of water in your swimming pool regardless of the shape and size of your swimming pool. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use the tape measure to determine the length of your swimming pool. For example, assume the length of your swimming pool is 12 feet.

    • 2

Use the tape measure to determine the width of your swimming pool. For example, assume the width of your swimming pool is 10 feet.

    • 3

Use the tape measure to determine the average depth of your swimming pool. To calculate the average depth, measure the water height at the deepest and shallowest points. Add these measurements and divide by two. For example, assume, the swimming pools depth is three feet at the shallowest point and eight feet at the deepest point. 3 + 8 = 11 / 2 = 5.5 feet. This figure represents the average depth of your swimming pool.

    • 4

Determine the multiplier based on the shape of your swimming pool. The multiplier for a rectangle, square or free-form pool is 7.5. The multiplier for a round or oval pool is 5.9.

    • 5

Determine the gallons of water in the swimming pool. Multiply the length figure from by the width figure by the average depth figure by the multiplier. Continuing the same example, 12 x 10 x 5.5 x 7.5 = 4,950. This figure represents the approximate number of gallons of water in the swimming pool.
