How to Recycle Futon Mattresses

Like regular bed mattresses, futon mattresses will become worn out over time and need to be replaced. Mattresses are bulky and, if they are thrown in the trash, end up in landfills. If the futon is still in usable condition, donation is possible to give the futon a second life. If the futon mattress is too old or damaged, it can be recycled and the materials used for new purposes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the store where you purchased the futon or the manufacturer. Some stores and manufacturers offer recycling programs.

    • 2

Check with your local trash removal and recycling offices. Some towns and cities may have recycling centers capable of handling mattresses.

    • 3

Check various resources that list recycling centers. For example, you can use the website Earth911 (see Resources) to search by state or zip code for recycling centers in your area. Check your local phone book as well for recycling centers.

Transport a usable futon mattress to a homeless shelter that accepts donations. You can also bring usable mattresses to places such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Check beforehand with the local branch of these organizations to determine if they are currently taking mattresses and when drop-offs are accepted.
