Remove debris around the pool area using a hose to wash it away. Wash down the side wall areas. Alternatively, use a leaf rake with a plastic rubber edge to remove leaves. These rakes are available at pool stores.

    • 2

Remove debris, such as leaves and insects, from your pool using a skimmer net. Remove as much of the debris as you possibly can.

    • 3

Brush your pool's walls from the top in long, strong strokes to remove algae. Do not use a brush other than a pool brush. Pool brushes are available at pool retail stores. Vacuum algae from the bottom of your pool using a pool vacuum after cleaning the walls.

    • 4

Check your pool's water level. Increase the level until it reaches the filter basket if it is low. Set a timer when adding or draining water from your pool. During summer months, you may have to increase your pool's level frequently due to evaporation.

    • 5

Check your heat pump. Remove leaves and debris in and around it. Turn the heater on and off to see if it is functioning properly. Turn the pump off while the heater is on. As the pressure from the pump drops, the heater should shut off automatically.

Inspect the other equipment around the pool and make sure they are free of leaves and debris. Inspect your equipment for any possible wears and tears, such as damaged filters.

    • 7

Vacuum your pool, starting with the walls and then the steps. Vacuum the bottom area last. Vacuum your pool slowly to ensure you collect all the debris. Empty out your vacuum's basket if you are losing suction, and then continue vacuuming your pool.
