How to Become a Certified Clog Dance Teacher

Clog dance teachers must be dedicated and focused individuals if they are intent on becoming certified clog dance instructors. The certification process can take up to three years to complete depending upon the applicant's schedule and the availability of mandatory events and classes. The National Clogging Organization (NCO) leaves plenty of room for creativity inside its instructor certification program. However, the organization does require very specific documentation to prove the instructor's teaching skills, including copies of original cue sheets and video footage of the instructor teaching clog dance classes.

Instructions

    • 1

Document your progress as a clog teacher and dancer. Keep track of the clog dance workshops and classes you teach and the seminars and events on clog dance you attend. Cue sheets you have written and videos of you teaching can be used when applying for certification.

    • 2

Fill out a NCO application for certification. Applications and program details must be obtained directly from the NCO and are not available online. The application requires a detailed explanation of the current status and history of the clog dance instructor's clogging career. The application requests proof of the applicant's teaching history. Call the NCO at 678-889-4355 to obtain an application and program package.

    • 3

Attend two CCI Classroom seminars and receive a Certificate of Education from each one. Offered by the National Clogging Organization, the CCI Classroom Seminar is a series of training sessions designed to assure that the clog instructor is familiar with all aspects of teaching clog dance. Visit the NCO website or call them at 678-889-4355 to find out the dates and times of classroom seminars being offered (see Tips).

    • 4

Obtain the recommendations of two certified clog instructors. These instructors must be familiar with the your teaching style and your ability to administer and manage a clogging program.

    • 5

Return the application and all qualifying materials to the NCO. The completed application allows you to continue gaining points and working toward becoming certified.

    • 6

Continue logging and tracking clog dance events and classes you attend. Each event and course translates into points that go toward your certification. The certified instructor program requires the applicant to have 500 mandatory points and 500 elective points as outlined by the NCO.

    • 7

Submit an Intent to Test Form and the $50 test fee. Test dates can be offered throughout the year in various areas of the US. However, a test date is always offered during the annual National Clogging Convention. Check with the NCO website to find current test dates. The test includes a written and a practical exam.

    • 8

Take the certification test and wait for your certification notice from the NCO. NCO will mail notification of certification to applicants and place the applicant's name and contact information in its certified clogging instructors registry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seminars are offered at various times of the year by certified clog dance teachers all over the US. Seminars are also taught by the National Clogging Organization every year the week prior to the National Clogging Convention.

  • Make sure you record all seminars, workshops and events that qualify as points for certification. This includes the two mandatory CCI classroom seminars. Check the NCO certification program details for log forms to use for this purpose and for details on what qualifies for certification points.
