How to Resurface Flanges

The flanges of your clay craft are what reach around and attach to the craft base. They come in handy as an additional way to keep your craft grounded to the base when combining with glue and mold compounds. However, if the flanges wear down, they can detach from the craft and cause it to fall off the base and break. Resurfacing the flanges ensures they fit comfortably around the craft and keep it right where it should be.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the clay craft's board on a flat surface, such as a table.

    • 2

Scrape the palette knife against the craft's clay flanges to resurface them. Continue scraping the flanges until they are at a desired level of flatness.

    • 3

Measure how straight the top of the flanges are with the straight edge. Place the edge directly on each part of the flange tops and look for the edge to lean slightly towards the left or right.

    • 4

Resurface the flange top parts that do not perfectly balance the edge to finish.
