How to Write a Book Report at the Fifth Grade Level thumbnail
Fifth grade students must contemplate themes and deeper meanings of books.

Writing a fifth grade book report is a little more challenging for students who have, by that time, become more advanced readers who can take on increasingly complex reading assignments. Writing a report at this grade level involves more than simply summarizing the contents of the book. Instead, fifth grade students may be required to provide more analysis of the book than they would have had to at lower grade levels.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what the requirements for the book report are, as assigned by your teacher. This will help you know what to look for as you read the book. Take an active approach to reading by specifically looking for what is required by the assignment as you read.

    • 2

Read the book thoroughly. Take some brief notes as you read the book to keep the main ideas and themes fresh in your mind. Pay special attention to the main plot, main characters and any symbolism or sub-themes throughout the book. Write these down as you go along so you can include them in your book report.

    • 3

Create an outline for your book report. Your report should consist of a plot summary and analysis. It should also consist of an introduction and a conclusion. Create your outline with each of these sections.

    • 4

Write the introduction to your book report. This is where you will introduce the book to the reader and provide an overview of what the report is about. The introduction should introduce the main plot of the story, but it should not give away the entire story. Instead, it should only hint at the main story to entice the reader to read further into your book report.

    • 5

Provide a summary of plot. This should follow the introduction and provide the reader with an overview of the main plot of the book, introducing him to all of the main characters of the story in summary form. Include a description of the main setting in the book also so that your reader will better understand the context of the story.

    • 6

Analyze the main themes of the book. Since you will have already told the reader what was in the book, now you will need to provide an interpretation of the book's meaning. Here you should include any themes that emerge from the story and how each character contributes to that theme.

    • 7

Conclude your book report by summarizing your report. Provide a basic summary that ties together the major components of your report. This will give your report a sense of coherence and completion it would otherwise be lacking if you suddenly ended it.
