Instructions

    • 1

Paint the ceiling in white interior paint. White interior paint instantly updates the appearance of the ceiling and makes the room bright.

    • 2

Hang wallpaper to bring back the 1920s style. Select prepasted wallpaper and spray the backing of the wallpaper with a misting water bottle. Start hanging wallpaper from the very top of a wall; using a putty knife, gently scrape the wallpaper in a downward motion, removing any air bubbles. Continue to the bottom of the wall. Overlap the next piece of wallpaper on the wall ¼-inch and repeat until each wall is papered. Art Déco and Streamline Modern are two design styles that originated in this era; look for wallpaper that echo these styles, with curving graphics, long horizontal lines, bold and dramatic patterns -- for example, sunbursts, zebra stripes and animal prints in pink and mint green.

Refinish the existing cabinets. Sand each cabinet with fine-grit sandpaper and sand with the grain. Remove all dust with a small brush. Paint the cabinets with interior paint, a paintbrush and paint roller. Paint inside and out completely to remodel them. Typically, 1920s kitchen décor contained colors like bright red, navy blue, mint green, primary yellow, white and black.

    • 4

Install hardwood crown molding in the kitchen according to the manufacturer's directions. Crown molding with little or no design gives the kitchen an authentic 1920s look. Measure the length of each wall and purchase crown molding according to the measurement; crown molding comes in a variety of sizes. Secure the crown molding to the wall with finishing nails and a hammer.

    • 5

Install moisture-barrier cement board on top of the countertops. Measure the width and length of the countertop and purchase cement board according to the size of your countertop. Lay the cement board flat on top and flush on the sides of the countertop. Secure cement board with screws and a drill. Screw each screw into the board approximately 12 inches apart.

    • 6

Tile the top of the cement board with glass or ceramic tiles. When selecting your tile for the remodel, take into account that tile in a single color such as navy blue creates an authentic look compared to tile with extensive graphics. Apply thinset to the top of the cement board according to the manufacturer's directions. Place the first tiles next to the wall and continue working across the counter. Space each tile with tile spacers, as this creates an even spacing for grouting.

    • 7

Grout the tiled countertop after the thinset has dried completely according to the manufacturer's directions. Once the grout has dried thoroughly, wipe the countertop clean with a damp sponge to remove excess grout. Allow the countertop to cure for approximately 48 hours before use.

Remodel the floor in the 1920's kitchen with checkered pattern linoleum flooring according to the manufacturer's directions. Measure the floor in the kitchen with a tape measure, and purchase the linoleum flooring according to the measurement. Apply linoleum flooring spray adhesive and secure the flooring to the floor.
