How to Put Shutters on Book Shelves

You can install shutter doors on your bookshelves so that you can close the shutters and completely enclose the shelves. This keeps your books from gathering dust, and it can help hide shelves of mismatched or unsightly books and tie your bookshelves in with the rest of your decor. The first step in this process is to find a pair of shutters that measure the same height as your bookshelves and that go with the rest of your room. Does this Spark an idea?

Place the hinges on the inside of the left side of the shutters, and use the holes in each hinge as a guide for your mounting holes. Drill pilot holes though each hole in the hinge, and then secure the hinge to the shutter with the supplied screws and a screwdriver.

Open the hinges, and place the door on the face of the bookshelf with the other side of the hinge against the shelf. If possible, have a second person hold the shutter. Position the shutter so the left edge rests flush with the left edge of the bookshelf and the top edge of the shutter rests level with the top edge of the bookshelf.

Drill a pilot hole through each mounting hole on the hinges, and then secure the hinges to the side of the bookshelf with the supplied screws and a screwdriver.

Duplicate the process on the right side of the bookshelf.

Close the shutters, and place a cabinet lock across both mating edges of the shutters. Use the mounting holes on the lock as your guide, and drill pilot holes. Secure both sides of the lock to the shutters. This allows you to secure the shutters closed.
