How to Create a Waterfall Using Gossamer

Decorating for a prom, reunion or other special event often requires a theme or at least a backdrop for photographs. A waterfall is a special addition to a jungle, beach, tropical or similar theme and offers an opportunity to incorporate mood lighting. Gossamer is a good material choice for a waterfall backdrop because it adds elegance and romance with its lightweight, gauze-like texture and shimmer. It is often made from silk, and its sheerness allows light to pass through. Making your own gossamer waterfall is doable if you have the time and supplies and can save money. Instructions

    • 1

Lean a panel of lattice against a wall. Lattice is available at home and garden supply stores. Paint it white or leave it natural so it won't show through the gossamer too much.

    • 2

Weave white or blue string lights through the lattice panel.

    • 3

Hang several thicknesses of light blue gossamer over the lattice panel and lights. The amount of fabric you use will determine how much light shines through, so use your own judgment to decide what looks best. Leave several inches of extra fabric at the sides and a few extra feet in length.

    • 4

Fold the fabric over the top of the lattice panel and staple it to the back. Instead of pulling the fabric taught over the panel, bunch it up and staple to give it a bubbling water appearance.

    • 5

Fluff and scrunch the fabric to create a soft, flowing "waterfall" of fabric. Bunch up the excess gossamer at the bottom of the panel to form a pool of water.
