A pool safety cover is an invaluable asset.

A pool safety cover differs from standard solar or winter pool covers in that the safety cover is pulled taut over the surface of the pool. The tension of the cover thus prevents a person or animal from entering the water. However, a safety cover is similar to other types of pool covers in that it must be cleaned and well maintained in order to function as it should. Fortunately, cleaning a pool safety cover is a relatively simple task. All that's required are a few basic pool supplies, a helper and a spare afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose debris from the top of the pool safety cover. Use a pool brush with a long handle to push away any leaves or branches. Because a safety cover is taut over the surface of the pool, no standing water should have accumulated on top of the cover. If a small amount of water is present, however, use the brush to push as much of it off the cover as possible.

    • 2

Disconnect all but four of the hold-down springs or anchors around the perimeter of the pool. Allow four of the hold-downs to remain attached at the corners of the pool.

    • 3

Position a helper on the opposite side of the pool from yourself and unhook one corner. As the corner is unhooked, begin pulling the cover off the pool by folding it over itself. The helper should grasp the cover in order to keep it from falling into the water. Continue unhooking the remaining hold-downs, folding the cover over itself in order to keep it out of the water.

    • 4

Remove the cover from the pool entirely, distributing the weight of the cover between yourself and your helper. Lay the cover on the ground and spread it out. Finish cleaning the cover by hosing it down with a garden hose and spray nozzle. Spray the cover until you've removed all dirt and grime.

    • 5

Allow the safety cover to dry in the sun. If you plan on storing the cover, wait until the cover has dried and sprinkle a small amount of talcum powder over the entire surface of the safety cover. The powder will help protect the material from the elements and keep it supple. Fold the cover neatly and place it in a dry area. Otherwise, place the cover back onto the pool with the aid of your helper.
