How to Install a Suburban Water Heater

How to Install a Suburban Water Heater thumbnail
Add a new water heater to your RV to improve comfort in your home away from home.

Suburban brand water heaters, available in a variety of sizes and powered by gas or electricity, supply warm water for motor homes and RVs. These water heaters mount to a door and connect to the gas and water lines of your motor home. Since installation involves dealing with gas lines, accuracy is essential. If you lack experience working with gas or water lines, leave installation to a professional. Leaking gas lines lead to serious problems, including potential illness or death.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend the flanges of the control housing to a 90-degree angle. Apply caulk around the flanges and gussets.

    • 2

Push the heater against the opening so that its mounting holes align with the door's gussets. Slide the water heater inward until it is flush with the gussets and latch bracket.

    • 3

Secure the heater with screws. Insert 3/4-inch wood screws through the flange holes. Use eight screws, securing all holes except for the outside holes located on the lower flange.

    • 4

Secure the outside holes with hinge pins. Place retainer brackets on top of each hinge pin and secure them with wood screws. Close the door.

    • 5

Connect the hot water line of the camper to one 1/2-inch female fitting of the water heater. Connect the cold water line of the camper to the other 1/2-inch female fitting of the water heater. These female fittings are located on the side of the water heater.

    • 6

Connect the gas. Remove the grommet next to the water heater's valve and connect the supply line of the camper to the valve. Replace the grommet and seal it with caulk.

    • 7

Test the gas and water. Fill the water tank with water and open the faucets. Examine the camper for leaks. Apply soapy water along the fittings of the gas system. Turn on the gas and check the fittings for bubbles. Even small bubbles indicate leaking gas.
