The CUSIP number is used to identify most securities, including stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The CUSIP number consists of nine characters, including letters and numbers, that uniquely identify a company or issuer and the type of security. Anyone who has filed for securities registration with an accepted regulatory authority can apply to have a CUSIP number issued.

For instance, common and preferred stock securities require an equity application, whereas municipal governments issuing bonds and notes want to file a negotiated issue application.
