How to Create Lowrance GPS Backgrounds

Add background maps to your GPS.

Lowrance, a GPS company, offers a program called MapCreate. This program creates background maps for Lowrance GPS units. These background maps add detail, routes and specificity to your current GPS. New background maps must overlap with the areas included in your GPS. For example, if your GPS contains only the continental United States, it will not accept a background map of Hawaii. MapCreate works with Windows computers, Windows 95 and older, and does not work with Mac or Linux computers.

Instructions

1. Install the MapCreate software onto your computer. Insert the disc and double-click on the icon. Follow the installation instructions, pressing "OK" when prompted. Double-click on the icon of the program to launch it.

2. Click on the "File" menu and select "Location." Click on your state.

3. Narrow the area. Drag your mouse over your county or city to zoom into a specific area.

4. Navigate to the toolbox and click on the "Cookie Cutter" icon.

5. Drag your mouse over the area you wish to add to the background map. Click on one corner of the area and drag your mouse to the opposite corner of the map.

6. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Save."

7. Add the background map to your GPS unit. Connect the GPS to the computer using the USB cable included with the GPS unit. Click on the icon of the MapCreate software. Click on the "Maps" folder and drag and drop it onto the icon of the GPS.
