How to Make a Trundle Bed Cover
A trundle bed is a great space-saver, but a standard bedspread will drag on the floor when it is used on a trundle bed. The excess length can catch in the wheels when you push the trundle under the bed, ripping the fabric and damaging the wheels. Turn a standard quilted bedspread into a trundle cover by shortening it and adding fitted corners. The spread will have a neat appearance when it is pushed under the bed. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Quilted bedspread
- Tape measure
- Scissors
- Pins
- Seam binding
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure the length, width and depth of the trundle mattress.
-
2
Calculate the length of the cover by adding the depth of the mattress to the length of the mattress and adding an inch. Measuring from the top edge, cut off the bottom of the bedspread to gain this length. The finished top edge of the bedspread will be the top edge of the trundle cover.
-
-
3
Calculate the width of the spread by adding the width of the mattress plus twice the depth and two additional inches. Cut the bedspread this width.
-
4
Center the bedspread, wrong-side up, on the mattress with the finished top edge even with the top edge of the mattress and all sides hanging down evenly.
-
5
Smooth down the sides and bottom of the bedspread all the way to the corners so that a triangular flap is sticking out on each of the bottom corners. Hold this flap in place by pinning along the side corners of the mattress. Be careful not to catch the mattress fabric in the pins.
-
6
Remove the bedspread and sew along the line of pins to make a fitted corner on the trundle spread. Remove the pins as you sew.
-
7
Cut off the excess fabric at the corners, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Finish the seams by zigzag stitching in the seam allowance.
-
8
Sew seam binding along the edges of the cover on both sides and the end. Fold under 1 inch on each end of the binding for a finished appearance.
-
9
Turn the cover right side out and place it on the trundle bed.

Tips & Warnings
If desired, add a band of elastic that goes from the lower edge of one side to the other, 8 inches from the fitted corners. Place this elastic band under the mattress to hold the cover in place while you are sleeping.
