How to Mount Trailer Axles

Trailer axles allow vehicles to tow heavy loads.

Trailer axles must be regularly maintained, taking into account the weight of the load they are bearing. Mounting an axle onto a trailer is not difficult, but it is easier with more than one person. Once the axle has been mounted, it can be maintained by applying grease every few months to avoid rust from building up. Axles that are used frequently should be maintained annually.

Things You'll Need

• Trailer axle
• Tire iron
• Jack
• Jack stands
• Brake line wrench set
• 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set

Instructions

1. Use the tire iron to loosen, but not remove, the lug nuts on the tires. Raise the trailer with the jack. Support it using a jack stand at both of the trailer's front corners.

2. Remove the lug nuts. Remove the wheels from the trailer and set them to the side.

3. Remove the U-bolts that secure the axle to the leaf springs using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

4. Use a brake line wrench to disconnect the axle from the brake line.

5. Remove the bolts from the leaf spring's forward mount with the ratchet and socket. When the leaf spring drops down, slide the current axle out and remove it from the trailer.

6. Put the new axle in place. Secure the leaf spring, and reattach the bolts using the ratchet and socket.

7. Tighten the brake lines with the brake line wrench.

8. Replace the wheels and reattach the lug nuts. Lower the trailer to the ground, remove the jacks and tighten the lug nuts.
