The U.S. Department of Education provides accreditation only to colleges that meet or exceed the standards set forth by the department. The minimum standards for each school are the same across the United States. The U.S. Department of Education website offers a free database that allows individuals to access a list of accredited colleges and universities through a database search.

      Open the U.S. Department of Education website and click "Accreditation, schools"; "Click here to begin your search"; select the state for which you would like to search for a college; click "Search." A list of colleges will be shown on the next page.

      Open the CollegeBoard Web page and click "College search"; enter the name of your state and click "Find" and the results of your search will be shown on the next page.

      Open the Peterson's Web page and click "College search." Click the search option you would like to use including searching by state, major, or enter a search and click "search." Your search results will be shown on the next page.
