How to Make Ultralight Planes

How to Make Ultralight Planes thumbnail
Ultralight aircraft can be built at home using a kit.

Ultralight aircraft give budding pilots an opportunity to enjoy their sport at a significantly reduced cost compared to traditional general aviation planes. There are no licensing requirements to fly an Ultralight aircraft, you can learn through self study, join a ultralight club or register to take a course. Ultralight aircraft do not have the ability to fly the same distances as a traditional plane. You can buy an ultralight aircraft already built and ready to be used, or you can buy a construction kit that will allow you to build your ultralight at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the sport and observe the different designs and costs both in time and money to build. Ultralight aircraft are available in open cockpit design and closed cockpit design which closely resemble general aviation airplanes.

    • 2

Open and start to unpack the kit. First locate the parts list or packing list and confirm all the parts that are written on the list are in the kit.

    • 3

Review the instruction guide and if there is an instructional DVD or video tape watch that in its entirety to get a sense of the building process.

    • 4

Start with the ultralight wing assembly. The wing assembly will contain a frame that will need to be assembled with screws, and a covering that will give the wing its final shape. Depending on the complexity of the ultralight design, there may be control surfaces that will be connected to a joystick in the cockpit. Other ultralight designs use a solid wing that can be articulated to adjust its lift rate.

    • 5

Assemble the tail section of the ultralight that will contain a rudder and two smaller tail wings. The rudder will be a controllable surface that will require guide wires to be run from the rudder through the fuselage to the cockpit where it will be attached to floor pedals.

    • 6

Build the fuselage. This is the body of the ultralight and will likely take you the longest to assemble. The fuselage will include the cockpit, landing gear and the mounting area for the engine and gas tank. The design of the fuselage will vary depending on the aircraft design, follow the instructions closely.

    • 7

Attach the tail and wing assembly, connect the guide wires for the rudder to the floor pedals in the cockpit.

    • 8

Mount the engine and wire the controls for engine speed and ignition back to the pilot's seating area.

    • 9

Attach the propeller to the engine, add fuel to the tank and test the engine. Inspect the final design and complete you walk around inspection before you fly in your ultralight plane.
