How to Replace a Broken Handle on a Canvas Briefcase

How to Replace a Broken Handle on a Canvas Briefcase thumbnail
Canvas briefcases are lightweight.

It is common for canvas briefcase handles to rip at the seams. It's better to sew the handle when it starts to come apart rather than wait and have to find a replacement handle.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy-duty needle
  • Nylon thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Seam ripper
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old handle. Clean up the area where the new handle will go with a seam ripper and scissors if necessary. Cut and pull out any loose threads. Line up the handle where it belongs. It may be possible to use the old handle as a guide. Both sides should sit securely and not hinder the function of the briefcase.

    • 2

Use one or two pins to hold the handle in place.

    • 3

Situate the sewing machine on a flat surface. Leave room to rotate the briefcase on the working surface. Release the needle--most machines have a lever in the back for this--and install the heavy-duty needle. It should be able to handle denim and canvas. Wind the bobbin.

    • 4

Sew slowly from the corner nearest you to the corner farthest away. The most secure fix is a square with an "X" through it. Make the first pass, making the square, then go back to make the "X" in the middle, going to opposite corners. Put steady pressure on the foot pedal. Pivot at the corners--stop stitching and turn the material in a new direction, then begin again.

    • 5

Finish the square and hold the reverse knob to double over the stitching. Backtrack over the starting point of your stitching. An inch will provide a secure base for the new handle.

    • 6

Remove the pins. Trim excess thread. Check your work. The handle should be secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Candle wax can make a stuck zipper move again.

  • Glue can make a connection last longer.
