How to Care for a Mexican Tile Floor

How to Care for a Mexican Tile Floor thumbnail
Mexican tiles are typically sold unglazed.

Mexican tile is a warm-colored tile that is hand formed from clay. The tiles are often uneven on the surface, because they are dried outdoors in the sun as opposed to being baked in a kiln. As a result, the weather can cause variations in the texture and size from one tile to the next. Mexican tiles are especially fragile, so it is of the utmost importance to protect them from dirt and large quantities of water. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Be especially careful during installation, as Mexican tiles break more easily than the average tile. Cover tiles with paper until the installation is complete to protect them from dirt and debris.

    • 2

Seal the tile. Sealing is perhaps the most important step in maintaining Mexican tile flooring. Because this tile is so porous, unsealed floors absorb spills and dirt very quickly. When you seal it, vacuum the surface thoroughly and then go over the floor with a damp mop. Spread a professional stone sealer across the floor and allow it to penetrate the surface for between 20 and 30 minutes before wiping up the excess sealer.

    • 3

Sweep the floors on a regular basis, even after they are sealed.

    • 4

Use a cloth to blot up spills immediately. Not only can spills cause damage to the tile itself, but light-colored grout can also be stained.

    • 5

Avoid the use of harsh chemicals. Use a stone and tile cleaner mixed with warm water. Never use a mop that is fully saturated -- a damp mop will clean the floor without the risk of weakening the tiles.
