How to Use a Tractor Logging Winch

How to Use a Tractor Logging Winch thumbnail
A tractor logging winch is used for moving logs with an agricultural tractor.

A tractor logging winch allows you to move logs from one area to another using an agricultural tractor's PTO and a three-point hitch. One benefit of using a logging winch is the capability of moving more than one log at a time. Another advantage a tractor logging winch has is the cable. It fits into tight areas the tractor is too wide to enter. As a result, a winch can be used in areas a grapple can not. In addition, a logging winch applies pressure and weight to the blade of the winch rather than pulling on your tractor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate the area between the logging winch and the log. Avoid objects that will hang the log up as you are winching it towards the tractor. You want a clear path. You do not want to fight to get your log over boulders, stumps or other logs.

    • 2

Fasten the log to the winch cable securely. Place your damper blanket over the cable. If you fail to fasten the cable securely and the cable comes off the log while under pressure, the recoil from the cable could injure you or other workers or damage your equipment. Your damper blanket absorbs this kinetic energy.

Mount the tractor and drive the logging winch blade into the ground using your three-point hitch, set the tractor's rpm to idle speed and engage the PTO. Dismount the tractor and grab hold of the winch's engage rope. Evaluate your work area one last time and pull the rope to begin reeling in cable.

Watch the log as you winch it in. Make certain it does not get hung up along the way toward the tractor. There is a great deal of pressure on the logging winch and the cable. A hang-up can be very dangerous. Pull the log to the desired location, disengage the winch and remove the cable from the log.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to follow each step precisely. While operating a logging winch is not difficult, there are hazards, so go slow and steady. Do not hurry.
