How to Disable the Primary DNS Suffix

The primary domain suffix (or primary DNS suffx) is appended to each computer name on a Windows network. The domain suffix identifies the network, and the computer name on the client machine is the unique name that identifies the computer on the domain. The Windows primary DNS suffix is set up in the Windows group policy object. You disable the primary domain suffix in the group policy editor.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button on your Windows server that contains the primary domain suffix policy. Click "Administrator Tools," then click "Group Policy Editor." The utility opens on your desktop.

    • 2

Double-click "Computer Configuration" on the left panel. A list of options expands underneath the Computer Configuration icon. Double-click "Administrative Templates," and then double-click "System."

    • 3

Double-click "DNS Client." Several DNS options are shown in the center detail pane. Double-click the policy labeled "Primary Domain Suffix." Select "Disable" from the option window. Click "OK" to save the changes that disable the primary DNS suffix.
