How do I Wire a Tow Hitch on a 1993 Jeep?

Towing hitches are often added to the back of Jeeps so that they can haul a larger load. However, it is important to remember to add taillights and stop and turn lights to the rear of the tow hitch so that other traffic is alerted to your driving. With modern day kits, it is possible to buy packages that will allow you to install these kits to your vehicle with having to splice, cut or join any wiring.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the negative terminal cable from the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical shock.

    • 2

Open the trunk and gain access to the electrical panel, which will be located on the driver's side, usually underneath the mat covering.

    • 3

Locate the two black wiring harnesses that are connected. They will be of the same shape as the wiring harness T-splitter located in your kit.

    • 4

Disconnect the two harnesses by releasing their lock tabs and pulling them apart.

    • 5

Place the T-splitter that's attached to the yellow wire between the two harnesses and connect all three together.

    • 6

Route the green wire from the connected T-splitter to the right side of the trunk.

    • 7

Remove the paneling on the right side of your trunk to gain access to the harnesses connected to the rear right taillight. Unlock the tabs of the harnesses and separate them. Insert the T-splitter that's attached to the green wire between the two harnesses and connect all three together.

    • 8

Run 12-gauge wire from the positive terminal of your battery to the back rear electrical access panel of your vehicle. You can route it underneath the vehicle and bring it up through the small access hole underneath the access panel.

    • 9

Attach the battery wire to the battery input on the T-splitter. It will be labeled.

    • 10

Connect the ground wire from the T-splitter to any exposed metal body or frame surface of the vehicle.

    • 11

Route excess wiring behind the panels you removed and reattach them.

    • 12

Reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Test the lights to make sure they are functioning properly.
