Instructions

    • 1

Line the outer edges of the floor area with smaller tile. For example, 6-by-6 or 3-by-9-inch slate tiles work well for this part of the floor.

    • 2

Mix the tiles when laying them out to create a random look to the colors in the floor.

    • 3

Decide on whether you want to lay the tiles diagonally or straight. Diagonal patterns look fancier, but will often require more tile because of the cuts involved in the style.

    • 4

Lay slate tiles in a pattern to further enhance your home's design. For example, if you decide to lay the tiles in a square pattern, start with an inner square and continue to lay in a square fashion to create a special look to the pattern.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dry fit the tiles prior to setting them with mud. This allows you to change and alter the style and slate tile colors without the problem of having to take up the tile.
