How to Maximize Classroom Time

How to Maximize Classroom Time thumbnail
Hone your time management skills and create an effective learning environment.

All class periods have a starting time and a stopping time. Within that framework, you must introduce a concept and provide a variety of strategies that will engage the students and allow for effective learning. As you plan your lessons, ensure that you stay within the given time parameters, cover the curriculum and set an appropriate pace for the class. Organize your classroom and implement strategies that will maximize instructional time while minimizing classroom disruptions.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide easy access to two clocks, one behind the students and another behind the teacher's desk. Ensure that everyone in the classroom can glance at a clock without any distracting body language. As you progress through the lesson, glance at the clock on a regular basis. If you have taught the lesson before, include estimated times for each section in your notes and try to stay on schedule.

    • 2

Write the schedule for each class on a side blackboard or whiteboard. Include estimated times for each activity and allow for a small amount of transition time. If there are unplanned disruptions such as fire drills, adjust the schedule and incorporate any missed activities into the next day's lesson.

    • 3

Start each class promptly and proceed at a brisk pace. Organize your materials beforehand and have alternate plans and materials available in case the original lesson plan does not work. Vary the activities; include discussions, discovery exercises, computer-assisted learning, games and independent study units.

    • 4

Appoint a student to act as timekeeper for each planned class discussion. He will watch the clock and ensure that the discussion terminates within a set time period. Alternate the role and give all students an opportunity to experience the importance of effective time management. As teacher, gently rein in the more extroverted students who like to linger on topics and occupy center stage. Encourage the more timid students to participate and do not allow anyone to interrupt or make inappropriate comments.

    • 5

Refrain from making any negative comments about the time. Do not rush the students by saying, "Quickly or we won't have enough time!" or "That didn't take as much time as I thought. What are we going to do with all this extra time?" In either case, you are communicating your inability to maximize classroom time. The end result could be frustration or acting out behavior.
