How to Make Triangle Scarves

Triangle scarves are a fashionable accessory.

Triangle scarfs are fashionable, if sometimes expensive, accessories. Designed to be worn on the head, neck or waist by both men and women, they are simple enough to fold from a square scarf or to make from scratch. To make your own triangle scarf, use a few basic sewing supplies and the fabric of your choice to make a one-of-a-kind fashion statement.

Things You'll Need

• 12-by-28-inch piece of fabric
• Fabric pen or marker
• Yardstick, ruler or sturdy straight-edged tool

Instructions

Make the Basic Shape

1. Lay fabric on your table or work surface with the wrong side facing up and fold it in half to make a crease along the short edge. Your 12-by-28-inch fabric should now be 12 inches by 14 inches.

2. Place the folded edge on the bottom of the rectangle and make a mark 2 inches from the top of the 14-inch, right-hand edge. Use the ruler or straight edged tool to draw a line from this mark to the bottom, left-hand corner. You should now have a triangle on the fabric.

3. Draw a rectangle that is 1 1/4-inch in width by 14 inches in length along the diagonal line you made. Cut out the triangle and rectangle by going around the outline of both shapes. Next, cut along the line that separates the triangle and rectangles. Unfold the triangle so the long edge is 28 inches again. You will now have two slender rectangles and the triangle.

4. Lay the slender rectangle down on your work surface with the wrong side facing up and fold it in half lengthwise to create a crease. Unfold the rectangle, then fold the top and bottom edges in to meet the crease you just made.

5. Fold in the new top and bottom edges and sew them together to create a thin tie. Repeat these steps for the other rectangle.

Assemble the Scarf

1. Place the triangle wrong side up and fold the two short sides in 1/4-inch. Fold them in another 3/8-inch and baste stitch the sides. Repeat these folds on the long edge, then pin them and baste. Remove the pins and locate the tube-like holes at each end of the long edge.

2. Insert each tie about 1/2-inch into the tube-like holes in the scarf, facing the stitching on them toward you. Secure the ties in the holes with baste stitching, then check your stitches on the decorated side of the scarf.

3. Stitch all the way around the scarf by hand or by machine. Make sure to overlap the baste stitches with the permanent ones. Clip any loose strings and tie knots in the ends of the scarf ties to finish.
