How to Replace a Window Pile Weatherstrip

Weatherstripping that is in good condition can keep drafts out of your home.

Over time, the weatherstripping in your windows can break down and become useless. Replacing the weatherstripping helps save money on your utility bill and can keep your house at a consistent temperature. Pile weatherstripping is a common type of weatherstrip. It is made from small, hair-like fibers. These fibers are placed in the center of a plastic fin. This fin is then installed in the channel of your window. Pile fin seals are typically manufactured for aluminum windows and doors.

Things You'll Need

• Flat-head screwdriver
• Damp cloth
• Measuring tape
• Pile weatherstripping
• Utility knife
• Pliers

Instructions

1. Take out the old pile weatherstrip from the window. Gently pry open the channel of the window with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull up one side of the old weatherstripping to get a good hold on the pile, then finish pulling out the weatherstripping from the window channel.

2. Clean the window channel with a damp cloth to remove any debris or dirt prior to the weatherstrip installation. Let the channel dry completely before installing the new weatherstrip.

3. Measure the channel of the window with a measuring tape. Transfer the measurements to the length of the new pile weatherstripping. Cut the pile weatherstrip to size with a utility knife.

4. Press the pile weatherstrip into the window channel. Do not stretch the strip as you insert it into the channel. Trim the ends of the pile weatherstrip flush to the ends of the window channel with a utility knife.

5. Press the channel shut with a pair of pliers. Open and close the window to ensure that the weatherstripping works properly.
