How to Power Up a 2002 Honda Metropolitan

Scooters have been praised for their economical and uncomplicated nature. The 2002 Honda Metropolitan expands on this by providing a simple and easy-to-use method of transportation. However, many new scooter riders are left in the dark when it comes to powering up their Metropolitan for the first time. Unlike an automobile, which involves little more than sticking the key into the ignition and twisting it to start the motor, the Metropolitan uses a series of switches and safety mechanisms to prevent it from starting accidentally. Although the process may sound time-consuming, it will become second nature in no time.

Set the red kill switch on the right handlebar to the "Run" position, indicated by a circular arrow.

    • 3

Pull in the rear brake lever, located on the left handlebar. Hold the lever in place to disengage the scooter's starter safety mechanism.

Press the starter button, located on the right handlebar below the red kill switch, to start the motor. If the motor does not start, release the starter button, then try again. Do not hold the starter button in for more than three seconds at a time, as doing so can damage the starter.

Release the rear brake lever and allow your scooter to warm up for two to three minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure that the right handlebar's kill switch is set to the "Run" position, indicated by a circular arrow. The starter will turn without actually starting the motor if the switch is placed in the "Off" position, indicated by a circular arrow with an "X."

  • The electric starter motor in your Metropolitan scooter is extremely sensitive and can be damaged by overusage. Never hold the starter button down for more than three seconds at a time to avoid premature starter wear.
