Steps for Video Modeling in the Classroom

Steps for Video Modeling in the Classroom thumbnail
Video modeling is an effective way for students to learn tasks without verbal instructions.

Video modeling is a form of learning through observation and imitation. Students with behavioral difficulties can learn how to improve their social skills and behavior through observing a model perform a skill on videotape. Once the skill is observed, students imitate and practice the skill that was observed. Video modeling is frequently used to teach students who suffer from autism spectrum disorders; however, it can also be used to improve communication and interaction skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the skill that you want the student or students to learn. It can be a skill such as communicating and interacting with others, or it can be a basic skill such as grocery shopping.

    • 2

Select a setting that is conducive to the task you want to teach. If you are demonstrating how to interact, you can do this at home or in the classroom. Also determine if you will need others to participate in the video.

    • 3

Borrow a camera from the school library or use your own. Ask someone to film the demonstration. Have adults or peers perform the task and record it. Tapes are usually brief and to the point. If the recording is too long, students may become distracted or confused by too much information.

    • 4

Display the recording to the class. Let them watch the video as many times as needed so that they can get a grasp on the skill they need to model.

    • 5

Ask the students to model the behavior they have watched on the video. Let them attempt the skill on their own without any coaching from you. However, video modeling used with autistic students usually benefits from prompts.

    • 6

Provide students with positive feedback and reinforcement if they are doing well.

    • 7

Ask them to repeat what they learned on another day. Show the video if necessary and repeat the steps until the students begin to master the skill.
