How to Install a Trailer Bunk Board

How to Install a Trailer Bunk Board thumbnail
Installing new bunk boards is a simple process.

Boat trailers have two bunk boards covered in carpet that help a boat slide in and out of the water. The bunk boards also support the boat during travel to and from the body of water. Over time, the wood on the bunk boards can become warped and damaged from the water. Fortunately, you can easily replace the boards in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the way the original bunk boards are attached to the trailer. Note any screws, bolts and other attachments used to hold the boards in place. Unscrew or unbolt the original boards from the trailer and set them aside.

    • 2

Place the bunk boards over the trailer supports where the original boards sat. Hold the bunks in place with large clamps.

    • 3

Place the drill under the trailer through the support hole in the trailer. Drill all the way through the bunk board to make a pilot hole for the bolts. Make the hole large enough for the bolts to slip through. Repeat the process for all other support holes and for the other bunk board.

    • 4

Screw the bolts in place through the drilled pilot holes. Make the head of the bolt sit flush with the top of the bunk board, or slightly below it, so that the bolts do not catch on the boat when it is pushed on and off the boards.

    • 5

Drill around the back holes on each bunk board to make a small slot for that one bolt hole. This allow the boards to have a little give, which is necessary when the pressure of the boat is set on the boards. With the small slot, the boards can bend slightly, and they will not snap under the weight of the boat.
